The annual Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Baseline Report has revealed some interesting trends in the automotive industry. While the number of businesses and job roles has fallen, vacancies have reached a 21-year high.
According to the report, there are currently 758,000 jobs in the automotive sector, which is an increase from the 742,600 recorded in 2022. Out of these jobs, 78% are in retail, while the remaining 22% are in other automotive roles.
On the other hand, the number of businesses in the industry has decreased from 100,000 in 2022 to 98,500. The majority of these businesses, 97%, are in automotive retail. Additionally, the number of job roles has fallen from 218 to 213 due to the adoption of new technologies.
In terms of demographics, the report found that only 19% of the sector consists of female workers, while 39% are aged under 35. These figures highlight the need for greater diversity and inclusion in the automotive industry.
Steve Nash, CEO of the IMI, expressed concern over the high number of vacancies and the declining number of businesses in the industry. He emphasized the importance of upskilling to meet the evolving demands of automotive technology and ensure that customers have access to the services they need.
Nash also stressed the urgency of filling the growing skills gap and increasing diversity in the sector. He believes that a more diverse workforce will lead to a stronger and more successful industry, capable of serving every motorist in the UK.
In conclusion, the IMI Baseline Report highlights the challenges faced by the automotive industry, including a high number of vacancies, a decline in businesses, and a lack of diversity. Addressing these issues through upskilling, support, and training is crucial to the industry's future success.
