Jaguar's new era begins with electric four-door GT

Jaguar is set to embrace its all-electric future with the introduction of a £100,000 four-door GT. Our exclusive image gives us a glimpse of what to expect from this exciting new model. From the rear, the GT showcases a bold design departure from Jaguar's current lineup, featuring a wide stance, sharp angles, and straight lines, along with a prominent diffuser. The sleek and modern look is further accentuated by razor-thin tail-lights and the absence of Jaguar badging.

In an interview with Auto Express editor-in-chief Steve Fowler, the new JLR boss Adrian Mardell expressed a clear desire to take Jaguar in a new direction with a fresh visual identity that embodies the brand's emotions. To achieve this, Jaguar's team of designers presented various design options to key stakeholders. The design language seen in our exclusive image was unanimously chosen and described by Mardell as "jaw-dropping." This rapid design process, known as Project Renaissance, involved three teams within JLR's design studio in Gaydon, resulting in 18 clay-model proposals within just three months.

Prototypes of the new GT are expected to hit the road for testing by the end of this year. The official unveiling of the car is planned for April or May 2024, with sales scheduled for 2025. This upcoming GT not only showcases Jaguar's new direction but also provides a glimpse of what's to come for the two new crossovers that will complete the lineup. Mardell emphasizes the importance of a cohesive family look across all models.

Jaguar is currently undergoing a full reboot as part of JLR's Reimagine strategy. The brand will be positioned alongside Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery as one of the four "brand pillars" of JLR. As part of this shift, no replacements are planned for the existing Jaguar models. Instead, the focus is on moving the brand upmarket. The GT, along with the other two vehicles in the lineup, will be manufactured at the Solihull plant, which will also produce the all-electric Range Rover. The GT is expected to be the most powerful Jaguar production car ever made, surpassing the brand's current EV, the I-Pace, in terms of range and charging capacity.

While specific motor outputs and performance figures have not been released, Jaguar claims that the new GT will offer up to 700km (435 miles) of range and will be capable of adding approximately 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes of rapid charging.
