Jeep Avenger: A Tough EV Crossover

The Jeep Avenger, the first battery-powered vehicle from Jeep, has caused quite a stir. It shares an EV platform with its Stellantis group cousins, including the Peugeot e-2008, Vauxhall Mokka Electric, and DS 3 E-Tense. This new Jeep is designed in Italy and built in Poland, making it the first Jeep to be created outside of America. It also marks the return of the Avenger name, which was once familiar to British buyers.

The all-new Jeep Avenger has already been crowned European Car of the Year 2023, adding to its appeal. Starting at £35,700, it competes in a competitive sector that includes the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, MG ZS EV, and Honda e:Ny1.

When it comes to looks, the Jeep Avenger stands out. Its chunky and cute design features a classic crossover shape, short overhangs, and extra ground clearance. It also incorporates signature Jeep design elements such as the seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel arches, protective cladding, and 'X' tail-lights.

Under the hood, the Avenger is initially available as a single-motor front-wheel drive, with a dual-motor 4x4 version planned for the future. It offers 154bhp and 260Nm of torque, powered by a 54kWh battery that provides up to 249 miles of range (342 miles in city driving). The Avenger can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 9.6 seconds and has a maximum charging speed of 100kW, allowing for a 10-80% top-up in under 30 minutes.

Inside the Avenger, there is ample headroom and a spacious boot. However, the back seats might be a bit tight for passengers with longer legs. The cabin design features a tough aesthetic, although some may find the abundance of black plastic and hard surfaces less appealing. The front of the cabin is fairly minimalist, with shortcut buttons under the 10.25-inch central touchscreen for essential functions like climate control. The Avenger also offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto functionality, and a built-in TomTom sat-nav.

On the road, the Avenger feels quicker than its official acceleration figure suggests, thanks to its instant torque. It effectively suppresses wind and road noise, even on poorer surfaces. The ride is firm but nimble, with well-controlled body lean and nicely weighted steering. However, the brake pedal has a lot of travel before engaging, which may affect confidence while driving. The Avenger offers six driving modes, including Eco, Normal, Sport, Sand, Mud, and Snow.

In terms of off-road capabilities, the Avenger is equipped with hill descent control, short overhangs, raised ride height, and impressive approach and departure angles. It also offers good visibility and a selection of cameras and sensors for added convenience.

The Jeep Avenger is available in three well-equipped trim levels: Longitude, Altitude, and Summit. It also offers various options for personalization, including decals, body paints, contrasting roof colors, and accessories.

In conclusion, the Jeep Avenger is an impressive debut EV from the iconic American brand. It stands out with its compact and cool design, competitive pricing, useful range, and good charging speed. It also offers ruggedness that sets it apart from many of its rivals.
