Volkswagen sees surge in electric vehicle sales
【Summary】Volkswagen Group, including brands like Audi and Skoda, has seen a 45% increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales, delivering over 530,000 EVs in the first nine months of 2023. EVs now account for 7.9% of Volkswagen's deliveries, with Europe being the main growth driver. The Volkswagen ID.4 was the most popular model, followed by the ID.3 and Audi's Q4 e-tron. Despite the European market's reluctance to buy EVs, Volkswagen remains the market leader in this segment.
Volkswagen Group, which includes brands such as Audi, Skoda, and Porsche, has achieved a significant milestone by delivering over half a million electric vehicles in the first nine months of 2023. This surge in sales comes as more people are opting to switch from traditional fossil fuel cars to electric vehicles, aligning with the company's commitment to achieving a net carbon-neutral balance by 2050.
During this period, electric vehicles accounted for 7.9% of Volkswagen's total deliveries, up from 6.1% in 2022. The European market showed the most significant growth with a 61% increase, totaling 341,100 electric vehicles. In America, electric vehicle deliveries grew by 74% to reach 50,300 units.
Breaking down the numbers, Volkswagen delivered 273,000 electric vehicles, followed by Audi with 123,000 and Skoda with 54,400. Porsche contributed with 27,900 electric vehicles, while Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles delivered 19,600 EVs.
Hildegard Wortmann, a member of Volkswagen Group's extended executive committee for sales, expressed satisfaction with the company's performance, stating, "We showed a good overall performance in our all-electric deliveries with a global increase of 45% in the first nine months. Despite the current reluctance in the European market to buy battery-powered vehicles, we gained market share and remained the segment leader. However, our order intake is below our ambitious targets due to the lower-than-expected overall market trend."
Among the various models offered by Volkswagen Group, the Volkswagen ID.4 emerged as the most popular, with 162,100 vehicles sold. It was followed by the ID.3, which saw 90,500 deliveries. Audi's Q4 e-tron, including Sportback models, secured the third position with 77,900 examples delivered.
