JLR to Introduce Compact Electric 'Defender Sport'
【Summary】JLR plans to release a smaller, fully electric version of the Defender called the Defender Sport in 2027. It will be based on the same platform as the electric Defender and is expected to borrow styling cues from the core model. The goal is to create distinct looks for each brand within JLR's family of vehicles.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been undergoing significant changes, separating its core models into individual brands and announcing the release of several new electric vehicles (EVs) in the near future. Among the rumors circulating, it has long been speculated that Land Rover would introduce a smaller model of the Defender, and it seems that these rumors are becoming more likely to come true.
Recently, JLR announced an electric version of the Defender, and it is expected that a smaller variant will also be released as a fully electric model. This smaller version will utilize the same platform known as the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA).
During an exclusive interview with JLR CEO Adrian Mardell, he mentioned the company's plans to create other vehicles within the Defender family. He stated, "I would've thought by this time next Global Media Day we'll be clear on what we are comfortable with producing off EMA." This suggests that more details about the smaller Defender model will be revealed in the near future.
According to rumors, the smaller Defender could be named the Defender Sport, following a similar naming convention as the Range Rover Sport, which is the smaller sibling of the Range Rover. Exclusive renders provide an idea of what the Defender Sport might look like.
It is anticipated that the design of the smaller car will borrow styling cues from the core Defender model, ensuring each brand within the JLR family maintains its distinct appearance. Features such as shorter overhangs and a boxy utilitarian look, which are characteristic of the Defender lineage, are expected to be incorporated into the design of the Defender Sport.
