JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover) has announced plans to introduce a new fleet of bio-fuelled lorries across the UK in April 2024. The goal is to significantly reduce the company's carbon emissions from road freight.
The new fleet will consist of 220 more sustainable HGVs, with 219 of them running on biofuels and one being battery-electric. JLR estimates that this switch will result in an 84% reduction in road-freight CO2 output, equivalent to cutting 8433 tonnes of emissions.
The bio-fuelled HGVs will use a combination of bio-CNG (compressed natural gas) and hydrogenated vegetable oil. This blend will bring a minimum CO2 saving of 85% per lorry. Additionally, the hydrogenated vegetable oil will be used to reduce emissions from existing lorries.
In addition to the shift towards new fuels, JLR will also transition to using 15.6-metre lorries. This change is expected to further contribute to the company's efforts in reducing carbon emissions from road freight.
