Electrification is becoming increasingly popular in the car industry, and Lamborghini is no exception. In response to the demand for hybrid power, the company is planning to introduce new models with hybrid engines. By 2024, hybrid engines will be featured across the entire Lamborghini range, including the Urus SUV.

Recent spy shots indicate that development is well underway for a new plug-in hybrid Urus. It is expected to share its powertrain with the recently facelifted Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. When it launches next year, the Urus PHEV is estimated to offer around 730bhp, making it one of the most powerful SUVs on the market.

The presence of a high-voltage sticker on the side of the prototype confirms that it is indeed an electrified model. Despite the camouflage, there don't appear to be many significant design changes compared to the current Urus. However, if you look closely, you can see new y-shaped horizontal grille slats and slimmer headlights.

To surpass the power and efficiency of the current Urus Performante, the PHEV will use a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 powertrain derived from the Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. The Cayenne combines the petrol engine with a 174bhp electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 729bhp and 701lb ft of torque. It is expected that the Urus hybrid will achieve similar figures, if not better.

This would place the Urus ahead of competitors such as the Range Rover Sport SV (626bhp), Aston Martin DBX707 (697bhp), and even the Ferrari Purosangue (715bhp). The Lamborghini should also be able to match or exceed the Cayenne's impressive 0-62mph time of 3.6 seconds and top speed of 190mph.

The new Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid can travel up to 45 miles on pure electric power, thanks to a 25.9kWh battery located under the boot floor. The Urus PHEV is expected to have a similar electric range. However, compared to the pure-petrol Cayenne S, the Turbo E-Hybrid is heavier by 405kg due to its electric hardware. This means that the Urus PHEV could potentially weigh around 2.5 tons when unveiled.
