Leader in the Field
【Summary】The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) is gaining popularity among European countries and Brazil, with several deals and deliveries taking place. Oshkosh's JLTV was selected in 2015 and has since received production contracts. AM General was selected in 2023 for a recompete, and its production line is expected to be ready soon. The JLTV provides high-level protection and can be adapted to meet different operational requirements. Oshkosh has even developed a hybrid-electric version of the JLTV.
Shephard Defence Insight reports that several European countries, including Belgium, Italy, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the UK, as well as Brazil, have either signed deals or begun receiving deliveries of the JLTV. The vehicle is becoming as iconic as its predecessor and has gained popularity in a short span of less than a decade.
Oshkosh was awarded the first contract for the JLTV in 2015, and in June 2023, the company announced that it had built the 20,000th vehicle. AM General, the original maker of the Humvee, was selected as a losing bidder in February 2023 and received a contract award of $8.66 billion for trailers and support, along with orders for up to 20,682 vehicles.
Brazil, the only customer outside the northern hemisphere, purchased a dozen JLTVs for the Brazilian Marine Corps, with a total contract value of $15.19 million. Slovakia also placed an order for 160 JLTVs, while Romania increased its order from 34 to 129 vehicles. Lithuania, an enthusiastic customer, has already received most of its 200 ordered vehicles and is expecting an additional 300 under a 2022 deal.
The JLTV provides MRAP-level protection against IEDs and other threats, with an armoured capsule that can be modified to meet changing operational requirements. Oshkosh has developed various versions of the JLTV, including a C2 vehicle, a launcher for loitering munitions, and a mortar carrier. The company has also developed a hybrid-electric version of the JLTV, called eJLTV, which offers silent drive, extended silent watch, and exportable power.
Following the selection of AM General, Oshkosh lodged an appeal with the Government Accountability Office (GAO), but the appeal was rejected. AM General's production line is expected to be ready soon, and the first JLTV is expected to roll off the line next year. Oshkosh can continue to sell JLTV A1 vehicles through FMS or direct commercial sale and has a current backlog that calls for production through 2024.
Overall, the JLTV has gained significant popularity among European countries and Brazil, with various countries placing orders and receiving deliveries. The vehicle offers high levels of protection and can be adapted to meet different operational requirements.
