Lexus RZ450e: Embracing the Electric Revolution

Lexus and its parent company Toyota have been leaders in hybrid engines for many years, but they have been slower to embrace electric vehicles (EVs). However, with the release of the RZ450e, Lexus is finally entering the EV market. James Fisher had the opportunity to test drive the new vehicle.

The car market has seen significant changes in recent years, particularly with regards to electrification. It's hard to believe that the first hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, was released in 1997. Shortly after that, Lexus introduced hybrid versions of their RX model, the RX400h and RX450h.

Lexus has been a pioneer in the hybrid market for over 15 years, but it has taken them a while to develop an all-electric vehicle. The RZ450e is their first fully electric car, designed from the ground up to be an EV.

Interestingly, another long-standing institution that has been ahead of the curve in addressing climate change is the Glastonbury Festival. Like Toyota and Lexus, the festival has been raising awareness and funds for environmental causes for many years. It seemed fitting to test drive the RZ at this festival, where two brands focused on climate justice could learn from each other.

Both Lexus and Glastonbury had something in common with the writer of the article, James Fisher. He had never been to Glastonbury before and had never driven an electric car. This weekend was a series of firsts for him.

When Fisher first saw the RZ450e, he was pleasantly surprised by its design. Unlike many modern cars that try to look futuristic, the RZ maintains a sense of composure while still looking new. The front end is dynamic, and without a conventional combustion engine, visibility is excellent.

The interior of the car is also impressive. It has a futuristic look without being over the top, and the infotainment system features a large screen. The materials and seats are of high quality, and the car even gives a fun welcome when you enter.

The RZ offers a decent-sized boot and spacious back seats. It also has a panoramic glass roof that can be frosted or unfrosted with the push of a button. Overall, the car provides a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.

However, there are some issues with the car's driving aids. While they are meant to enhance safety, they can be overbearing and make the driver feel like they are not in control. The system can brake and steer the car even when it's not necessary, which can be frightening for someone not used to it. Additionally, the constant pinging of the safety features can be irritating.

Despite these drawbacks, the RZ is a fun car to drive. It offers impressive acceleration and handles sharply thanks to its low center of gravity and advanced suspension. The car strikes a balance between excitement and practicality, making it a medium-sized SUV that is enjoyable to drive.

On the motorway, the RZ is smooth, quiet, and comfortable. It effortlessly covers long distances, and even driving through London is a breeze thanks to its snappy acceleration and response.

One of the biggest challenges facing EVs like the RZ is convincing people that they are not significantly different from traditional cars. The RZ succeeds in this regard, as after just five minutes of driving, you forget that you're in an EV. The car's range is also impressive, and recharging at a service station is a quick and convenient process.

After five days at the Glastonbury Festival, Fisher was pleased to know that he was not only participating in a net-zero event but also contributing to a sustainable drive home. Despite being parked in the sun for four days, the battery charge remained unaffected. The RZ handled the journey home smoothly, even in heavy traffic.

While there are some issues to address, such as the range and overbearing safety features, the RZ is a great entry point for those considering an EV. The fundamentals are there, and as technology improves, these issues will likely be resolved. The RZ represents the electric revolution in the automotive industry.

Here are some details about the Lexus RZ:

  • Price: From £64,500
  • Range: Up to 271 miles (per the manufacturer), about 230 miles (as driven)
  • Charging time: About 25 minutes from 10 to 80%
