Lexus RZ450e: Embracing the Electric Revolution

Lexus and its parent company Toyota have been leaders in hybrid engines for many years, but they have been slower to embrace electric vehicles. However, with the release of the RZ450e, Lexus is finally catching up in the electric vehicle market. James Fisher had the opportunity to test drive the RZ450e.

The car market has experienced significant changes in recent years, particularly in relation to electrification. It is hard to believe that the first hybrid car was released so long ago. The Toyota Prius, the first mass-produced hybrid car, was introduced in Japan in 1997. Soon after, Lexus, Toyota's luxury division, joined the hybrid market with the RX400h and RX450h models.

Lexus has been a pioneer in the hybrid market for over 15 years, even though it wasn't fashionable or urgent to produce hybrid cars at that time. It is surprising, then, that it has taken Lexus so long to develop an all-electric vehicle (EV) from the ground up. But now, the RZ450e is here.

Another long-standing phenomenon that has gained popularity in recent years is the Glastonbury Festival for Contemporary Performing Arts. Like Toyota and Lexus, the festival has been ahead of the curve in raising awareness and funds for climate change and pollution. It seemed fitting to test the RZ450e at this festival, where two brands dedicated to climate justice could potentially learn from each other.

What Toyota, Lexus, and the Glastonbury Festival also have in common is James Fisher. Before attending the festival and driving the RZ450e, Fisher had never been to Glastonbury or driven an all-electric car. It was a weekend of firsts and lasts for him.

When Fisher first saw the RZ450e, he was pleasantly surprised by its design. Unlike many modern cars that try to look futuristic, the RZ retains a sense of composure and still looks like a regular car. The front end is particularly dynamic, and the absence of a conventional combustion engine in the engine bay improves both aesthetics and visibility while driving.

The interior of the RZ450e is also impressive. It has a futuristic design without being excessive, and the infotainment system features a large screen. The materials used in the interior feel expensive and pleasant to the touch, and the seats are comfortable. The car's "welcome" feature, known as Omotenashi, adds a fun touch.

The RZ450e has a decent-sized boot and spacious back seats. It also features a panoramic glass window that can be frosted or unfrosted with the push of a button, adding to the car's appeal.

While the RZ450e has many driving aids and safety features, Fisher found some of them to be overwhelming. The car can assist with parking, staying within the lines on the motorway, and even braking or steering in certain situations. While these features are meant to enhance safety, they can make the driver feel like they are not in control. Additionally, the car's warning system can be overly sensitive, causing unnecessary alerts.

Despite these challenges, Fisher found the RZ450e to be a fun car to drive. The acceleration is comparable to a sports car, and the low center of gravity and advanced suspension contribute to sharp handling. The RZ offers a combination of excitement and practicality, making it an enjoyable medium-sized SUV.

On the motorway, the RZ450e provides a smooth and quiet ride. It is comfortable and handles well, making long drives enjoyable. Charging the car is also convenient, with a 20-minute charge at a service station providing 80% battery capacity. The RZ450e's range is around 230 miles, which is decent but not exceptional.

Despite some minor issues, the RZ450e is a promising electric vehicle. As society transitions to electric vehicles and addresses climate change, the RZ450e offers a good starting point for those considering entering the EV market. With further improvements, electric vehicles like the RZ450e will become even more appealing.
