Lotus Emeya electric 'hyper-GT' debut set for September 7

Lotus has officially announced that its highly anticipated electric super-saloon will be named the Emeya. The car, previously known as Type 133 and mistakenly associated with the Envya nameplate, is set to be revealed in full on 7 September. A preview video reveals some of its key features, including a wraparound LED rear light bar, a movable rear wing, and distinctive LED headlights that match the design of the Lotus Eletre SUV.

The Emeya is referred to by Lotus as a hyper-GT, similar to how the Eletre is called the world's first hyper-SUV. This suggests that the Emeya will offer power and performance figures that rival some of the fastest supercars, rather than typical combustion engine saloons. Lotus expects the Emeya to be particularly popular in China and the US, which are crucial markets for the brand. The company's bosses have also stated that the Emeya will be the most luxurious car Lotus has ever produced.

The confirmation of the Emeya's name follows the sighting of prototypes on the road, covered in promotional camouflage. Late prototypes have already begun production in Wuhan, China, at the Lotus Technology facility. The Emeya will be roughly the same size as the Polestar 5 grand tourer, which is set to be released next year. However, Lotus managing director Matt Windle has emphasized that despite some technology transfer between Geely-owned brands, each brand is allowed to develop independently. This means that the Emeya and the Polestar 5 will have distinct differences in every key aspect.

From spy shots, it is clear that the Emeya will feature sleek styling, a sloping roof, and design elements inspired by the Evija and Eletre models. Lotus has placed great emphasis on the dynamic development of the Emeya, as it will directly compete with the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron GT. The car will utilize similar chassis technology to the Eletre, including air suspension, rear-wheel steering, active roll control, and active aerodynamics. However, these features will be engineered to meet the specific requirements of the Emeya.
