Lotus Emeya electric 'hyper-GT' debut set for September 7

Lotus has officially announced that its long-awaited electric super-saloon will be called the Emeya. The car, previously known as Type 133 and mistakenly associated with the Envya nameplate, will be fully revealed on 7 September. A new video preview of the Emeya confirms several key features, including a wraparound LED rear light bar, a movable rear wing, and a distinctive LED headlight signature that matches the Lotus Eletre SUV.

The Emeya is referred to by Lotus as a hyper-GT, similar to how the Eletre is dubbed the world's first hyper-SUV. This indicates that the Emeya will boast power and performance figures more in line with supercars rather than traditional combustion engine saloons. Lotus expects the Emeya to be particularly popular in China and the US, two crucial markets for the brand. According to Lotus bosses, the Emeya, measuring five meters in length, will be the most luxurious car the company has ever produced.

The announcement of the Emeya's name follows the sighting of prototypes on the road, camouflaged for promotional purposes. Late prototypes have already begun production in Wuhan, China, at the Lotus Technology facility. The Emeya will be similar in size to the upcoming Polestar 5 grand tourer, but Lotus managing director Matt Windle has stated that there will be distinct differences between the two models since Geely allows its brands, including Polestar, to develop independently.

Spy shots of the Emeya reveal sleek styling, a sloping roof, and design cues taken from the Evija and Eletre models. Lotus has placed significant emphasis on the dynamic development of the Emeya, as it will directly compete with the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron GT. The Emeya will feature similar chassis technology to the Eletre, including air suspension, rear-wheel steer, active roll control, and active aerodynamics, but it will be engineered to meet different performance requirements.
