Lotus Emeya electric 'hyper-GT' unveiling scheduled for September 7
【Summary】Lotus will reveal its long-awaited electric super-saloon, the Emeya, on 7 September. The Emeya will be a hyper-GT, offering power and performance comparable to supercars rather than traditional combustion-engine saloons. It will be the brand's first performance saloon since the 1990s and is expected to be popular in China and the US. The Emeya will feature luxurious touches and will be similar in size to the Polestar 5, but will have distinct design and technological differences.
Lotus has officially named its highly anticipated electric super-saloon the Emeya, which will be fully revealed on 7 September. Previously known as Type 133 and mistakenly associated with the Envya nameplate, the Emeya has been showcased in a new video, confirming its features such as a wraparound LED rear light bar, a movable rear wing, and a distinctive LED headlight signature that matches the Lotus Eletre SUV.
The Emeya is referred to by Lotus as a hyper-GT, similar to how the Eletre is dubbed the world's first hyper-SUV. This highlights its power and performance figures, which are more in line with some of the fastest supercars in the world rather than conventional combustion engine saloons.
Lotus expects the Emeya to be particularly popular in China and the US, which are crucial markets for the brand. It will be the brand's first performance saloon since the Vauxhall-based Carlton in the early 1990s and is said to be the most luxurious car Lotus has ever produced.
Confirmation of the Emeya's name follows the sighting of prototypes on the road with promotional camouflage livery. Late prototypes have already started production in Wuhan, China at the Lotus Technology production line.
The Emeya will be similar in size to the upcoming Polestar 5 grand tourer, but Lotus managing director Matt Windle has emphasized that there will be tangible differences between the two models, as Geely allows its brands, including Polestar, to develop independently.
Spy shots reveal that the Emeya will feature sleek styling, a sloping roof, and design cues from the Evija and Eletre. Lotus has placed significant emphasis on dynamic development, as the Emeya will directly compete with the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron GT. It will share similar chassis technology with the Eletre, including air suspension, rear-wheel steering, active roll control, and active aerodynamics, but with engineering tailored to its specific requirements.
