Lotus Emeya electric 'hyper-GT' unveiling set for September 7

Lotus has officially announced the name of its highly anticipated electric super-saloon. The car, previously known as Type 133, will now be called the Emeya. This news comes ahead of the car's full reveal on September 7th. At one point, there was some confusion as it was mistakenly associated with the name Envya. However, Lotus has now clarified that the Emeya will be the official name of their new electric vehicle.

A new video preview of the Emeya has also been released, showcasing some of its key features. The video confirms that the car will have a wraparound LED rear light bar, a movable rear wing, and a distinctive LED headlight signature that matches the design of the Lotus Eletre SUV. These design elements give the Emeya a unique and futuristic look.

Lotus is referring to the Emeya as a hyper-GT, similar to how they dubbed the Eletre the world's first hyper-SUV. This indicates that the Emeya will offer impressive power and performance figures, comparable to some of the fastest supercars in the world. This positioning sets it apart from other saloons with combustion engines.

The Emeya will be Lotus's first performance saloon since the early-1990s Vauxhall-based Carlton. This new model is expected to be particularly popular in China and the US, which are crucial markets for Lotus. According to the company's bosses, the Emeya will also be the most luxurious car ever produced by Lotus.

Confirmation of the Emeya's name follows the recent sightings of prototypes on the road, featuring promotional camouflage livery. Late prototypes have been running down the Lotus Technology production line in Wuhan, China, since earlier this year. This suggests that the car is nearing its final stages of development.

In terms of size, the Emeya will be similar to the Polestar 5 grand tourer, which is set to go on sale next year. However, Lotus has made it clear that there will be significant differences between the two models. While there may be some technology transfer between Lotus and its parent company Geely, each brand is allowed to develop their cars independently. Therefore, the Emeya will have its own unique characteristics that set it apart from the Polestar 5.

Spy shots of the Emeya reveal its sleek styling, sloping roof, and design cues taken from the Evija and Eletre models. Lotus has placed a strong emphasis on the dynamic development of the Emeya, as it will be competing against formidable rivals such as the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron GT. The car will feature similar chassis technology to the Eletre, including air suspension, rear-wheel steer, active roll control, and active aerodynamics. However, these components will be engineered specifically for the Emeya's unique performance requirements.
