Lucy Letby, a former nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital, has been found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six more, making her the UK's most prolific child killer in modern history. Letby was accused of injecting her victims with air or poisoning them with insulin between June 2015 and 2016. She was found guilty of "playing god" and carrying out a horrifying campaign of death. But who is Lucy Letby and how did she become the UK's most notorious nurse?
Lucy Letby grew up in Hereford, a small English cathedral city on the border with Wales. Described as a "geeky girl" who was quiet and unassuming, she had always wanted to become a nurse. She was known as "sweet," "studious," and "kind" by her friends during her time at a local comprehensive school. Letby was part of a close-knit group of friends called the "miss-match family."
After leaving school, Letby attended the University of Chester, where she remained hard-working and dedicated to her studies. None of her friends could have imagined that she would later be accused of being a child killer.
Letby started working as a children's nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2011, shortly after graduating from university. She also completed a training placement at Liverpool Women's Hospital. During her time at the hospital, Letby had a clean record with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and even helped raise £3 million for the neonatal unit.
In 2016, the Countess of Chester Hospital experienced an unusually high number of baby deaths, prompting an independent review and the involvement of Cheshire Police. Letby was moved from nursing to clerical work in 2016, and senior doctors at the hospital suspected her of being responsible for the deaths. She was arrested in July 2018 and charged with eight counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder.
Letby's trial began in October 2022 at Manchester Crown Court and lasted for nine months. On July 10, the jury was sent out to consider their verdict, and on August 18, the guilty verdicts were returned.
