A man has been arrested in connection with a massive fire at Luton Airport's car park, which resulted in the collapse of the structure. The man, in his 30s, was detained as a precautionary measure, but investigations suggest that the blaze started accidentally due to a vehicle fault.
Bedfordshire Police have stated that the arrest was made on suspicion of criminal damage. They are conducting a thorough investigation into all potential lines of inquiry following the significant fire. The man has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
The fire occurred on October 10 at Terminal Car Park 2, and it was declared a major incident. Over 100 firefighters were deployed to control the blaze, which spread across multiple floors of the car park and caused a partial collapse of the structure.
According to Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, the fire likely started due to an electrical fault or leaking fuel line in a diesel car, possibly a Range Rover. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that any of the approximately 1,500 cars inside the car park at the time of the fire will be salvageable.
