Arnold Schwarzenegger played a role in the creation of the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also known as the G-Wagon. During the debut of the V8 G-Class in 2018, Schwarzenegger urged Dieter Zetsche, the head of Mercedes-Benz at the time, to develop a battery version of the SUV. Although the idea was not thoroughly discussed by Mercedes, Zetsche agreed. Ola Källenius, the current CEO of Mercedes, recalls the humorous response from his team when asked about a product plan for the electric G-Wagon.

Five years later, I have the opportunity to be the first non-Mercedes employee to test drive the electric G-Wagon. Despite its camouflage, the vehicle maintains the iconic features of the Geländewagen, including its boxy shape, round headlights, large wheels, and high clearance. However, the electric G-Wagon offers advantages such as instant torque, a silent ride, and advanced software for off-road driving. If Mercedes can overcome production challenges, the electric G-Wagon has the potential to captivate both loyal fans and new enthusiasts.

During my test drive with Källenius, I experience the capabilities of the electric G-Wagon on various terrains, including mud hills, steep inclines, and rocky trails. The vehicle's low center of gravity, thanks to the flat placement of its batteries, provides excellent balance and grip. Its acceleration and braking performance impress, and the electric G-Wagon handles off-road conditions effortlessly. The silent operation allows for a more immersive experience with nature.

Externally, the electric G-Wagon closely resembles its conventional counterpart, with only subtle modifications for efficiency. The interior is expected to have similar features, including dual touchscreen displays and intuitive touch controls on the steering wheel. Additionally, the electric G-Wagon offers a unique feature called the "G Turn," which can spin the vehicle 360 degrees in place.

Despite its off-road capabilities, the electric G-Wagon is not limited to extreme driving scenarios. It can effortlessly ascend and descend concrete steps, showcasing its versatility. While the official pricing and name are yet to be announced, the electric G-Wagon's instant acceleration, performance, and silent ride make it an appealing choice for those seeking an electric SUV.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has gained a devoted following and has become a symbol of status. With an average price of $150,000, the G-Class is favored by athletes, reality stars, and off-road enthusiasts. The vehicle has even caught the attention of the Pope. The G-Class has become a cultural phenomenon, with millions of posts on Instagram dedicated to it. However, the high demand has caused waiting lists to exceed two years, prompting Mercedes to temporarily stop taking new orders. The company is now preparing for the influx of electric G-Wagons and is committed to electrifying its entire product range.
