MG4 EV 2023 Review

The MG4 is a small electric car that competes with well-known brands like Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, and Volkswagen. Despite being a budget EV, it offers more than just affordability. It provides a good driving experience, a decent electric range, and comfortable seating. If you're in the market for a stylish small car with low running costs, the MG4 is definitely worth considering.

MG's first fully electric car, the MG4, is built on the manufacturer's Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), which will also be used for other MG EV models. The MG4 is available with three different battery sizes and four power outputs, ranging from the entry-level SE model to the performance-oriented MG4 XPower. Depending on the model, the electric driving range varies from 218 miles to 323 miles, and all versions offer rapid-charging capability for convenient long-distance travel.

The MG4 comes generously equipped with features such as alloy wheels, LED headlights, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and an infotainment touchscreen with smartphone connectivity. Higher-spec models, like the Trophy and XPower, offer additional luxuries like heated seats, wireless smartphone charging, and an upgraded audio system. The range-topping XPower also includes distinctive 18-inch alloys and larger brakes for enhanced performance.

As a value proposition, the MG4 is a compelling choice. The SE Long Range model is particularly recommended due to its respectable electric range and comprehensive features. It offers great value for money and meets the needs of most drivers.

The real-world range of the MG4 depends on the battery capacity chosen. In our experience with the long-term MG4 Long Range model, equipped with a 64kWh battery pack, we achieved a realistic range of 230-240 miles with an average efficiency of 3.8mi/kWh.

Since the MG4 is a relatively new model, it's too early to determine its reliability. However, electric cars, in general, are known for their reliability, and the MG4 comes with a seven-year warranty for added peace of mind. MG, originally a British brand, is now owned by Chinese parent company SAIC Motor.
