Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Sales Surge in Q3 2023

Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) has reported a significant increase in vehicle sales in the United States during the third quarter of 2023. Compared to the same period last year, sales improved by over 32 percent, reaching a total of 22,196 vehicles. Furthermore, the company has sold a total of 67,736 vehicles so far this year, representing a 4.1 percent year-over-year increase.

An interesting highlight is the success of Mitsubishi's sole plug-in model, the upgraded Outlander PHEV. This model has been performing exceptionally well, achieving another quarterly sales record. In the third quarter, Mitsubishi sold 1,887 units of the Outlander PHEV, a significant increase compared to just six units of the previous generation sold during the same period last year. These sales account for 8.5 percent of the brand's total volume.

It is worth noting that the internal-combustion engine Mitsubishi Outlander remains the more popular choice, with 9,340 units sold in the third quarter. This means that the ICE version outsells the PHEV by a ratio of 5:1.

Looking at the year-to-date sales figures, Mitsubishi has sold a total of 5,104 units of the Outlander PHEV in the US. This represents a remarkable 351 percent increase compared to the previous year and accounts for 7.5 percent of Mitsubishi's total volume.

In comparison, in 2022, Mitsubishi sold 1,961 units of the Outlander PHEV, which accounted for 2.3 percent of the total volume. This year, within just nine months, Mitsubishi has already surpassed its full-year sales record from 2018, which stood at 4,166 units. The company is on track to exceed 7,000 sales of the Outlander PHEV in 2023.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, equipped with a 20-kilowatt-hour battery, offers an EPA all-electric range of 38 miles and a total range of 420 miles. With a starting price of $40,345, plus a destination/handling charge of $1,445 ($1,570 in Alaska/Hawaii), the Outlander PHEV provides a competitive option in the market.

Looking ahead, Mitsubishi has plans to introduce more rechargeable models before the end of this decade. While specific details are not yet available, previous reports suggest that the company is working on several all-electric vehicles, including pickups and SUVs, which are expected to be released by 2028. It is likely that these new Mitsubishi plug-ins will have some connection to Nissan plug-ins, potentially sharing the same platform. This collaboration is possible due to the close financial relationship between the two Japanese brands and their involvement in the broader Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.
