Netherlands: Moving Towards 50% EV Share by September 2023

Plug-in electric cars in the Netherlands continue to dominate the market, with their market share reaching nearly half of all new car sales. Last month, 13,916 new plug-in cars were registered, which is a 55 percent increase compared to the previous year. In contrast, the overall market only grew by 17 percent to 29,855 new car registrations.

This significant growth in plug-in car sales allowed their market share to rise to 47 percent, a substantial jump from 35 percent a year ago. It is even predicted that the share could reach 50 percent later this year. Within the plug-in car market, all-electric cars accounted for 34 percent of registrations, which is approximately five times higher than in the United States.

In terms of specific numbers, approximately 10,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered, representing a 34 percent market share. Additionally, around 3,900 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) were registered, accounting for a 13 percent market share. In total, plug-in car registrations reached 13,916 units, reflecting a 55 percent increase and a 47 percent market share.

Since the beginning of the year, the Netherlands has registered over 121,000 new plug-in electric cars, which makes up around 43 percent of the total market. This includes approximately 82,200 BEVs with a 29 percent market share and around 39,700 PHEVs with a 14 percent market share. Overall, plug-in cars have experienced a 70 percent increase in registrations compared to the previous year.

In 2022, the Netherlands registered more than 107,000 new passenger plug-in electric cars, accounting for 35 percent of the total market. This was an increase from 30 percent in 2021.

The Tesla Model Y maintained its position as the most registered new passenger car in the Netherlands in September, with 1,784 registrations. It had a significant lead over the second-best car, the non-rechargeable Volkswagen Polo, which only achieved half of Tesla's registrations. Other top-selling BEVs included the Volvo XC40 Recharge, Kia Niro EV, and Peugeot e-208. Interestingly, the Volkswagen ID.4 ranked 10th in plug-in car sales, trailing behind its cousin, the Skoda Enyaq iV.

After nine months of the year, the Tesla Model Y stands out with over 10,000 sales. The Volvo XC40 follows with over 5,900 registrations, considering both all-electric and plug-in hybrid models.

The top 10 plug-in car models year-to-date include the Tesla Model Y, Volvo XC40, Lynk & Co 01 PHEV, Peugeot e-208, Skoda Enyaq iV, Kia Niro, Ford Kuga PHEV, Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen ID.4, and Renault Megane E-Tech.

In terms of brands, Tesla leads with an 11.3 percent market share, followed by BMW, Volvo, Peugeot, and Volkswagen. Among automotive groups, Stellantis has the highest number of registrations, followed by the Volkswagen Group, Geely-Volvo (including Lynk & Co and Polestar), Tesla, and Hyundai-Kia.
