New Van for River Dwellers

Ford is well aware that camper vans are a source of fun and offer a renewed sense of freedom for those who are willing to look beyond crossovers and SUVs. The automaker is preparing to release what appears to be the 2024 Ford Transit Custom Nugget, an updated version of a popular van in the one-tonne segment.

In recent times, camper vans have become increasingly popular for two main reasons: remote work and the desire to travel extensively before facing potential movement restrictions again. These vehicles also allow drivers and passengers to reduce accommodation costs without sacrificing too many amenities. Additionally, there's the added benefit of being able to enjoy Neil Young's "Down by the River" in peace, without disturbing others. Find the right spot to relax or spend the night, and you won't have to worry about neighbors.

A short video shared by Ford Pro CEO Ted Cannis on X (formerly known as Twitter) showcases a new vehicle with a pop-top roof in a lush forested environment. The tent's window is slowly opened, revealing a person sitting in a potentially comfortable bed. The camera then pans to someone using a shower head that can also function as a sink faucet, a convenient feature for travelers who prefer not to spend nights at traditional resting places. Inside the vehicle, we see a person cutting vegetables on a kitchenette and extra storage space on the liftgate, which could accommodate camping chairs or more.

So how did we determine that this teaser is for the 2024 Ford Transit Custom Nugget? It's quite simple. The first clue is Ford's Ted Cannis stating, "Get ready for an outdoor adventure!" The second clue is the timing. Two years ago, Ford introduced the 2022 Ford Transit Custom Nugget, with the official unveiling taking place in late August 2021. Two years prior, in 2019, Ford collaborated with Westfalia to create a light commercial vehicle (LCV) for self-sufficient travelers. Last year, Ford introduced the 2023 Ford Transit Custom with a new design and interesting powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid. This was an alternative to the all-electric E-Transit Custom van.

The third clue lies in subtle coincidences. Earlier this month, Volkswagen provided the first official glimpse of its updated California camper van, confirming that the next generation would feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Ford and Volkswagen have formed a partnership to share manufacturing capabilities and platforms. Both brands aim to cater to customers in this market segment who seek vehicles that suit their adventurous lifestyle without compromising on creature comforts found at home or in hotels.

The only dilemma now is for buyers to choose between VW's and Ford's offerings. However, the competition will soon be settled as the 2024 Ford Transit Custom Nugget is set to be unveiled on Thursday, August 24, 2023. Volkswagen's California camper van should follow shortly after. Hopefully, at least one of them will make its way to North America this time.
