Polestar partners with Ohme and Octopus Energy for affordable and eco-friendly charging

Polestar has strengthened its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint through partnerships with Ohme and Octopus Energy. This three-way partnership aims to provide Polestar customers in the UK with cheaper charging options at home and on the road, as well as the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint through renewable energy provision for home charging.

Through its long-term partnership with Ohme, both retail and fleet customers purchasing a new or pre-owned car will receive a preferential price for an Ohme charger with standard installation, starting at £925. Additionally, for a limited time, private customers will also benefit from a package deal that includes a complimentary Ohme charger with standard installation or £900 in Octopus Electroverse public charging credit with their new or used car order.

In addition to the partnership with Ohme, Polestar has collaborated with green energy supplier Octopus Energy. Customers who switch their energy supply to Octopus will receive £30 credit and gain access to cheaper and greener EV charging tariffs at home, as well as up to an 8% discount on public charging through the Electroverse App.

Polestar is one of the few manufacturers worldwide that offers customers full transparency on the climate impact of its cars through a life cycle assessment (LCA). This assessment is now available for the upcoming 4 SUV-coupé model. The LCAs highlight the importance of recharging cars with renewable energy to reduce the break-even point, which is the point at which the car stops contributing CO2 to the environment compared to a petrol or diesel vehicle.

Customers who use suppliers delivering 100% green electricity, such as Octopus, can reduce the break-even point of a Polestar 2 from around 50,000 miles (79,000km) if charged with fossil fuel-produced energy to around 30,000 miles (49,000km).

Ohme's dynamic smart chargers can connect with the National Grid in real-time and automatically adjust their charging to take advantage of low-price charging with smart off-peak tariffs. This not only reduces costs but also provides drivers with access to renewable energy, aligning with Polestar's efforts to accelerate the transition to sustainable, electric mobility.

Jonathan Goodman, Head of Polestar UK, emphasized the importance of charging EVs with renewable energy, stating that it can more than halve the carbon footprint during the car's lifecycle compared to a petrol car. He believes that the partnership with Ohme and Octopus makes this process easier, simpler, and more effective for customers, while also offering significant off-peak savings.

Data from Ohme demonstrates the potential cost savings for Polestar drivers using smart chargers. Running a Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor with an Ohme smart charger on Intelligent Octopus Go could cost £103.02 for a year, assuming an average UK driver covers 6,800 miles. In comparison, charging on the standard variable tariff would cost £384.58 for the same distance, while an equivalent petrol car would cost over £1,200.

David Watson, CEO at Ohme, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Polestar, highlighting Ohme's position as one of the UK's fastest-growing dynamic smart charging companies. He believes that Ohme's technology, combined with Polestar's innovative EVs, makes them a natural partnership. Watson also mentioned that smart charging with Ohme could cost a Polestar driver just over £100 for an entire year of motoring.
