Skoda Superb gets a revamp with 62-mile PHEV

The new Skoda Superb will be released in mid-2024, bringing significant technological upgrades, a new plug-in hybrid powertrain with a range of 62 miles, and a redesigned user-friendly cockpit.

Skoda's fourth-generation executive flagship will be available in both hatchback and estate bodystyles. It will continue to use combustion power and offer a choice of six engines at launch, including three petrols, two diesels, and a petrol-electric PHEV.

While prices for the new Superb are expected to be slightly higher than the outgoing model, Skoda has promised minimal increases for the Kodiaq. The plug-in hybrids are likely to be priced in the mid-to-high £40,000s, undercutting the closely related Volkswagen Passat.

Skoda may consider the Superb as its final internal-combustion car, as the brand plans to shift towards offering only electric vehicles by 2030. However, the company has not confirmed whether each of its current ICE cars will be electric in their next generation.

The engine lineup for the Superb includes a mild-hybrid 1.5-liter petrol engine with 148bhp, and two 2.0-liter petrol options with 201bhp and 262bhp respectively. The diesel options include a 148bhp two-wheel-drive version and a 190bhp four-wheel-drive version.

The range-topping PHEV combines the entry-level 1.5-liter petrol engine with a single electric motor, delivering 201bhp to the front wheels. It is equipped with a 25.7kWh battery pack that can be recharged at rates up to 50kW, allowing for a 10-80% charge in just 25 minutes. Unlike the previous-generation car, the PHEV will only be available in estate form from launch.

Although the performance figures for these engines have not been disclosed, it is expected that they will match the performance of the outgoing model. For reference, the previous 215bhp Superb iV plug-in hybrid achieved a 0-60mph sprint time of 7.3 seconds in our full road test.
