Racecar Prototype Sold for $22k

Track day enthusiasts often gravitate towards small manufacturers like Caterham, Radical, Dallara, BAC, Ariel, or Ginetta. However, there are also custom-made vehicles with racecar aesthetics and track-focused setups that catch their attention. One such example is the unnamed prototype pictured here, which was meticulously handbuilt using Audi parts.

At first glance, this vehicle is designed to resemble the Group C racecars from the '80s and '90s. It boasts a low and wide stance, a droplet-shaped canopy, and a central driving position. The absence of mirrors and license plates suggests that this car is intended solely for track use, meaning it's unlikely to be street-legal.

Various features on this prototype, such as the prominent splitter, wide shoulders, NACA-style air ducts, side exhausts, roof scoop, large rear wing, and wide rear tires, all convey its track prowess. However, it remains unclear if this build incorporates any motorsport genes beneath its striking exterior. The owner mentions the use of numerous Audi parts but doesn't provide specific details about the underpinnings or specifications. Based on appearances, it's possible that this model is built on a custom chassis rather than utilizing the architecture of a donor vehicle.

Regarding the powertrain, this prototype is equipped with a rear-mounted V6 engine sourced from the first-generation Audi A4. While the most fitting choice for this build would have been the bi-turbo 2.7-liter V6 from the original RS4, the car features a 2.8-liter unit from a lesser variant. This engine produces up to 190 horsepower (193 PS / 142 kW), which is still quite potent for a lightweight vehicle. Additionally, it can be easily tuned for even more power. The owner claims that the prototype is in working condition, albeit requiring some minor work.

This unique vehicle is currently located in Vásárosnamény, Hungary, and was listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace. It was recently shared in the Unique Cars For Sale 3.0 Group with an asking price of €20,000 ($21,840). While this may seem more affordable compared to most track-day toys, it's worth noting that a used Mazda MX-5 can be purchased and tuned for significantly less. Unfortunately, the listing is no longer available, suggesting that someone may have already acquired this distinctive prototype.
