Toyota Land Cruiser: New Diesel and Hybrid Options

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its iconic Land Cruiser off-roader, showcasing a stronger chassis, a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and the possibility of a hybrid powertrain. The appearance of the vehicle has also been enhanced, with a sleek retro design inspired by the brand's 1980s and 1990s models.

Despite the changes, the fundamental formula of the Land Cruiser remains the same. The body still sits on a traditional ladder frame, which now offers a 3.5-ton towing capacity and is 50% stiffer. The engine and transmission still drive solid-beam axles, maintaining the vehicle's reliable performance.

The Land Cruiser's chassis is based on the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series Land Cruiser, although this model is not available in the UK or western Europe. Currently, power is generated by a 2.8-liter diesel engine with 201 horsepower and 500 Newton-meters of torque.

In 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option for the Land Cruiser, which will enhance fuel economy at low speeds and during stop-start driving. Both diesel and hybrid versions will be equipped with a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, providing smoother gear changes compared to the previous six-speed transmission.

Toyota has also improved the Land Cruiser's off-road capabilities. The vehicle now has shorter overhangs, redesigned bodywork for better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. This feature, controlled by a switch on the dashboard, aims to enhance the ride quality and handling on rough terrain.

Other notable changes include a shift from hydraulic to electric power steering, which reduces kickback and improves maneuverability at all speeds. The body panels have been designed for easy repair or replacement, particularly the front bumper, which is divided into sections. Inside, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that are glove-friendly. The Land Cruiser will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser will begin later this year, and deliveries are expected to commence in the first half of 2024. Additionally, a limited First Edition model will be released, with only around 3,000 units available in Europe. This special edition will feature classic round headlights and come in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
