Reviving the Joyous Energy of the Original: Electric Minis

The BMW-era Mini has always been known for its compact size, but over the years, cars have been getting bigger. However, the original Mini from 2000 fit perfectly into the compact city car class at the time.

Now, in its fifth generation, the original Mini is revealed alongside the larger Mini Countryman at the 2023 IAA International Motor Show in Munich. Both cars are available in all-electric versions, marking the first time for the Countryman.

The design of the new Minis focuses on what Mini calls 'Charismatic Simplicity', which aims to bring back the simplicity of the original Mini. The surfaces are smoother and the rear lights are better integrated into the overall design of the car.

There seems to be an influence from Paul Smith's minimalist Mini Electric, as the new models feature materials and surfaces rendered with less fuss and a more minimal look overall.

The new Mini Cooper, available in high-spec SE trim, has an interior dominated by a 24cm circular touch-screen information display. The new Mini Operating System 9 includes an 'intelligent personal assistant' and the ability to select seven different driving modes.

The larger Mini Countryman also receives tech upgrades, along with integrated semi-automated Level 2 driving and self-parking capabilities. Mini is focusing on pushing the capabilities of the electric versions, with the Countryman expected to have a range of around 287 miles.

Both the new Mini Cooper and Countryman will be available next year, and we look forward to experiencing what they have to offer.

MINI Cooper Electric will be priced from £30,000 and will be available in spring 2024. The MINI Countryman will start at £28,500 and will be available in February 2024.
