The Vauxhall Astra is undergoing a significant transformation, following the introduction of the Griffin style approach with the second-generation Mokka small SUV in 2020. This new design language, known as the 'Vizor' design, has been implemented across all future Vauxhall models, including the refreshed Crossland and Grandland SUVs.

Over the years, the Vauxhall Astra has faced criticism for its bland styling, lackluster engines, and lack of excitement. However, since being acquired by the PSA Group in 2017 and becoming part of the larger Stellantis family, Vauxhall has experienced a revival and a renewed sense of purpose.

While there are a few minor drawbacks, such as the need for improved interior quality in certain areas and slightly limited rear seat space, the Vauxhall Astra still presents itself as a strong contender in the family hatchback class.

The eighth-generation Vauxhall Astra has been completely revamped to become a stylish and practical family hatchback. It offers strong infotainment, good practicality, and a decent driving experience. The efficient petrol engines deliver excellent fuel economy, and the availability of plug-in hybrid and all-electric models adds versatility, particularly for business users.

In the past, the Astra struggled to match the perceived quality of the Volkswagen Golf or the driving dynamics of the Ford Focus. Competitors like the Mazda 3 and Honda Civic also offered more striking alternatives, making the Astra appear lackluster in comparison. However, the latest iteration of the Astra features a modern and sophisticated design, impressive onboard technology, and crucial electrified powertrain options to enhance its eco-friendly credentials.

Despite the growing popularity of family SUVs, there are still numerous five-door hatchbacks on the market that pose a challenge to the Astra. Reliable and practical options include the SEAT Leon, Skoda Octavia, and the aforementioned Volkswagen Golf. The Hyundai i30 and Kia Ceed, both of Korean origin, are also worth considering. Additionally, the Peugeot 308 and DS 4 share the same EMP2 platform as the Astra. For those in need of extra storage space, the Astra is also available in Sports Tourer estate form.

Buyers of the Vauxhall Astra have the choice between petrol, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains. The base 1.2-litre petrol engine comes in two versions, producing either 109bhp or 128bhp, and comes with a standard six-speed manual gearbox. An optional eight-speed automatic transmission is available for the more powerful variant.

The 1.6-litre petrol plug-in hybrid powertrain is capable of producing 178bhp in the regular Astra and 222bhp in the performance-oriented Astra GSe. With this setup, the Astra can cover up to 43 miles solely on electric power, making it an attractive choice for company car users.

For those looking to minimize their Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) costs, the all-electric Astra Electric is an even better option. It features a 154bhp electric motor with decent performance and a 54kWh battery pack, providing a range of up to 258 miles on electric power alone.

In terms of trim levels, the latest Astra offers three options: Design (entry), GS (sporty), and Ultimate (luxury). The petrol Astra range starts at around £27,000, offering competitive pricing compared to similar rivals. Prices for the plug-in hybrid models are slightly higher, starting at over £37,000, while the preferred GS-spec Astra Electric is priced at over £40,000.
