Supercar Functionality with a Wild Side

At the 2023 Quail show during Monterey Car Week, Lamborghini unveiled their daring Lanzador concept. This unique vehicle combines the ride height of a Urus with the profile of a Huracán, featuring all-electric, four-motor technology derived from the hybrid Revuelto. The Lanzador would certainly stand out in the EV market and make a one-of-a-kind addition to Lamborghini's hypercar lineup.

We had the opportunity to speak with Lamborghini's chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr, about the creation of the Lanzador and the challenge of maintaining Lamborghini's identity as they transition to electric vehicles.

Car and Driver asked Mohr about the inspiration behind the Lanzador concept. Mohr explained that the idea came from the world of super-sports cars. The goal was to combine the experience of driving a sports car with enhanced usability. The Lanzador is designed as a GT 2+2, providing a spacious second row and a large tailgate for practicality. Mohr highlighted that this concept fills a unique gap in the market, as SUVs may offer space but lack the supercar feeling.

The conversation shifted towards electrification and how Lamborghini, known for its loud and rowdy nature, plans to tackle this transition. Mohr assured that Lamborghini will not compromise on their signature characteristics. They have been working for two years to define the electric driving experience of a Lamborghini. Mohr emphasized that there are opportunities with electric drivetrains that have yet to be fully explored. Lamborghini plans to develop their own functionalities and deliver a completely different experience compared to current electric cars on the market.

Mohr also discussed the importance of maintaining an emotional connection in electric vehicles. He explained that the shape of acceleration plays a role in creating an engaging experience. Linear acceleration can become monotonous, so Lamborghini aims to deliver a more dynamic acceleration curve. Additionally, feedback from the car's systems, such as the feeling of the drivetrain's inertia when going off-throttle, adds to the emotional component.

When asked about any overlap with Audi's electrification efforts within the Volkswagen Group, Mohr acknowledged that they do leverage the knowledge and experience of the group. However, Lamborghini's brand positioning requires them to find their own unique path. They strive to offer something even more exhilarating and awe-inspiring.
