Supercharged LFP battery: 249-mile range in just 10 minutes

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has introduced a new electric vehicle (EV) battery called Shenxing, which boasts a 400km (249 miles) driving range with a 10-minute charge. The battery, made with super electronic network cathode technology and nano-crystallised LFP cathode material, allows for the extraction of lithium ions and a rapid response to charging signals. It offers superfast charging, high energy density, and a high level of safety. CATL supplies batteries to Tesla, Toyota, and VW, and believes that Shenxing will significantly alleviate fast charging anxiety for EV users.

Shenxing also has a range of over 700km (435 miles) on a single full charge, opening up the era of EV superfast charging. It can charge to 80% capacity in 10 minutes at room temperature, and in just 30 minutes at temperatures as low as -10°C. The battery also enables uncompromised acceleration performance at low temperatures. Dr. Wu Kai, chief scientist of CATL, emphasized the importance of making advanced technology accessible for all EV consumers, enabling everyone to benefit from innovation.

Mass production of Shenxing is expected to begin by the end of 2023, with electric vehicles equipped with the battery available in the market in the first quarter of next year. In addition to CATL, other companies are also working on EV and battery innovations. Toyota, for example, is developing long-range battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and all-solid-state batteries. Toyota's battery technology aims to deliver a range of 1,200km (746 miles) with a quick charge time of 10 minutes or less. They are also striving for commercialization of their battery technology by 2027/2028.
