Tata Motors has ambitious plans to include 10 electric vehicles (EVs) in its portfolio by 2025. This lineup will consist of existing models such as the Nexon, Tigor, Tiago, and Express T, as well as new offerings.
Recently, the company unveiled the concept car Curvv, which will be mass-produced on its Gen II platform. This platform is optimized for EVs but can also accommodate traditional combustion engines.
When discussing the new EV lineup, Vivek Srivatsa, head of marketing and sales at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, mentioned that the company will introduce the Curvv EV, a coupe SUV, along with the Harrier EV and Sierra EV.
Regarding the concept of "born electric" vehicles, Srivatsa explained that these vehicles cannot have internal combustion engines. Tata Motors believes in creating products that are compatible with both electric and traditional engines, allowing them to attract a larger customer base and benefit from economies of scale.
Expanding on the challenges of EV adoption, Srivatsa emphasized the need to enhance the charging infrastructure. He identified two key areas for improvement: highway charging and charging for vehicles without dedicated parking slots.
Tata Motors aims to become completely carbon neutral by 2040. The electrification of cars is a significant step toward achieving this goal. However, the company will continue to offer vehicles with various powertrains as long as there is a demand.
Srivatsa predicts that by 2030, 50% of Tata Motors' sales will be EVs, while the other 50% will be internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. He also believes that smaller cities have high potential for EV penetration due to shorter travel distances, the availability of dedicated parking spaces, and the positive reception of electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers in these areas.
As Tata Motors' portfolio expands in terms of both EVs and ICE vehicles, Srivatsa acknowledges the need for a separate channel to cater to the different product ranges and customer demands.
