Tesla's patent filing unveils the inner workings of the Magic Dock

Tesla has recently unveiled the inner workings of its innovative new EV charging accessory, the Magic Dock, in a patent filing. This charging accessory has generated a lot of interest since its introduction by Tesla.

The Magic Dock essentially functions as a seamless charge adapter, allowing for compatibility between NACS to CCS or NACS to J1772 connectors. It cleverly disguises itself as a receptor for a charge connector, while still maintaining the appearance of a normal charging station. Tesla EV owners can use it in the usual way, but non-Tesla electric vehicle owners can also utilize it by simply unlocking the Magic Dock, which then automatically attaches to the connector and becomes a CCS adapter. This charging adapter provides a seamless experience for users.

This new product is of great significance as it enables Tesla to open up its charging network to electric vehicles from other manufacturers. It is currently being deployed at Supercharger stations in North America and is also compatible with the recently launched Tesla Universal Wall Connector.

The details of the Magic Dock have been revealed in a patent filing submitted by Tesla. The patent describes the protocol of the Magic Dock, explaining that it is an adapter for EV supply equipment (EVSE) with a connector for charging a plug-in electric vehicle (PEV). The adapter features a body with a first coupling that engages the first connector, as well as a second coupling corresponding to a second charging protocol. The body converts the first charging protocol to the second charging protocol and includes a lock that allows it to be locked to either the EVSE connector or the EVSE.

The patent filing also includes various drawings that illustrate the mechanism behind the Tesla Magic Dock. These drawings provide further insight into how the accessory functions and how it is integrated into Tesla's Universal Wall connector.

What are your thoughts on Tesla's Magic Dock? Do you see it as a testament to Tesla's ongoing innovation?
