Caravan holidays have become increasingly popular in the UK, offering convenience, affordability, and fun for families. However, with the changing landscape of motoring, it can be challenging to determine which models are the best tow cars to buy. Fortunately, the Caravan and Motorhome Club (CMC) Towcar Awards are here to help. This year, the awards have seen a significant change, with nine pure electric vehicles (EVs) included as contenders. In the past, there were concerns about the compatibility of electric cars with caravanning due to range anxiety and a lack of suitable charging infrastructure. However, perceptions are changing, and car manufacturers are taking towing with an electrified vehicle seriously.

The Director General of the CMC, Nick Lomas, emphasized the importance of providing unbiased information to help those who plan to tow. Auto Express is part of the panel of Club driving judges, contributing to the assessment of cars and caravan combinations at the Millbrook proving ground. The tests evaluate various factors such as hill starts, handling, acceleration, braking, stability, and practicality to determine the Tow Car of the Year champion.

The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Platinum Edition has been awarded the title of Overall Tow Car of the Year and Class winner for Caravan Weight Over 1,700kg. With a kerbweight of 2,500kg, a noseweight of 140kg, and a max towing capacity of 3,500kg, the Cayenne E-Hybrid offers impressive performance. Its petrol V6 engine combined with a battery and motor provides 456bhp, allowing for a 0-62mph time of five seconds and a top speed of 157mph. The vehicle can also drive up to 22 miles in electric-only mode and achieve a mid-30s mpg. The Cayenne's stability is enhanced by the additional weight of the battery and motor, making it an excellent choice for towing.

Although the Cayenne is an exceptional tow car, its price may be a drawback for some buyers. However, with the emergence of electric rivals in a similar price range, the Porsche becomes a more viable option. The quality of design, engineering, and performance make it an ultimate tow car.

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz 204PS 77kWh Pro Style has been named the Class winner for Caravan Weight Up to 1,100kg. With a kerbweight of 2,502kg, a noseweight of 100kg, and a max towing capacity of 1,000kg, the ID. Buzz offers retro-inspired style reminiscent of classic VW vans. It has a range of 251 miles and provides smooth acceleration. While the towing capacity may be limited, the ID. Buzz handles well within its parameters and is a practical MPV.

The Skoda Enyaq Coupé iV 82kWh vRS has been awarded the Class winner for Caravan Weight 1,100kg-1,300kg. With a kerbweight of 2,307kg, a noseweight of 75kg, and a max towing capacity of 1,200kg, the Enyaq Coupé is an appealing choice for those with a lightweight caravan habit. Its four-wheel drive configuration and low centre of gravity contribute to its stability on the road. The Skoda offers an impressive range of up to 309 miles and a comfortable cabin.

The Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0 TDI 150PS DSG SE L has won the Class winner for Caravan Weight 1,300kg-1,500kg. With a kerbweight of 1,577kg, a noseweight of 80kg, and a max towing capacity of 1,600kg, the Octavia Estate excels in towing performance. Its diesel engine paired with a DSG automatic gearbox offers traditional appeal for caravanners. The Octavia boasts a high-quality interior and spaciousness, making it an excellent choice for family transport.
