Toyota Hilux hybrid introduced in Europe- Fortuner hybrid next?

In India, the current-generation Toyota Hilux is available in two trims: Standard and High. The prices range from Rs 36.30 lakh to Rs 45.10 lakh (both ex-showroom).

Toyota has recently introduced the new Hilux MHEV in Europe. This version of the popular pickup truck is a mild hybrid and will be manufactured in Thailand for the European markets. Earlier this year, Toyota began testing prototypes of the Hilux MHEV in Africa.

One of the major updates in the Toyota Hilux mild hybrid is the revised 2.8-litre diesel engine, which now features a 48V mild hybrid setup. This powertrain has been in development for some time and is one of the few electrified diesel power mills in the mass market segment. The 48V mild-hybrid system includes a battery, an electric motor generator, and other components.

Toyota assures that the integration of mild-hybrid technology will not compromise the off-road and towing capabilities of the pickup truck. The company strategically placed the components for the mild-hybrid setup, allowing for a water wading depth of 700mm.

According to Toyota, this configuration will offer better torque assistance, smoother start/stop functionality, regenerative braking, and up to a 10% increase in fuel efficiency compared to pure diesel powertrains. Reports suggest that this mild hybrid setup will be reserved for the top-spec variants of the Hilux, while the lower trims will receive it at a later stage.

It is also worth noting if there will be an increase in power and torque outputs of the 2.8-litre diesel engine. Currently, this engine produces 201 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque in the Hilux. The engine is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Besides Europe, the Hilux MHEV will also be launched in South Africa, Australia, and ASEAN markets in the near future. While there are chances of the mild hybrid pickup truck being launched in India, it is not expected to happen immediately. Instead, Toyota may consider incorporating the same technology in the upcoming new-generation Fortuner, which is scheduled to make its global debut in the next few months.
