Toyota Land Cruiser gets new power options

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its popular Land Cruiser off-roader, which comes with a stronger chassis, a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. The design has also been revamped, with sleek retro panelling inspired by Toyota's iconic models from the 1980s and 1990s replacing the previous generation's angular tinwork.

Despite the changes, the basic formula of the Land Cruiser remains the same. It still features a traditional ladder frame, albeit one that is 50% stiffer and offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles, maintaining the vehicle's ruggedness.

The updated Land Cruiser is built on the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series Land Cruiser, although this particular model is not available for purchase in the UK or western Europe.

Currently, the Land Cruiser is powered by a 2.8-liter diesel engine that delivers 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. In 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option, which is expected to improve fuel economy in low-speed and stop-start driving situations.

Both diesel and hybrid versions will be equipped with a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, promising smoother gear changes compared to the previous six-speed transmission. It is unclear whether a manual option will be available.

Toyota has also enhanced the Land Cruiser's off-road capabilities. The vehicle now has shorter overhangs, bodywork designed to provide better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. The latter can be operated via a switch on the dashboard, resulting in improved ride quality and easier handling on rough terrain.

Other changes include a shift from hydraulic to electric power steering, aimed at reducing kickback and improving maneuverability at all speeds. The body panels have been developed for easy repair or replacement, particularly the front bumper, which is divided into several sections.

Inside, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be operated with gloved fingers. The Land Cruiser will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser will begin later this year, with deliveries expected to start in the first half of 2024. Additionally, a limited First Edition model will be offered, featuring classic round headlights and available in sand or smoky blue paintwork. Only around 3,000 units of this special edition will be built for Europe.
