Toyota Land Cruiser gets new powertrain options

Toyota has introduced a refreshed version of its popular Land Cruiser off-roader. The updated model boasts a more robust chassis, a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. In terms of appearance, Toyota has opted for a sleek retro design, drawing inspiration from its iconic 60- and 80-series models from the 1980s and 1990s.

While the overall formula remains unchanged, with the body resting on a traditional ladder frame and the engine and transmission driving solid-beam axles, there have been significant improvements. The chassis now utilizes the same GA-F platform found in the full-size 300-series Land Cruiser, although this particular variant is not available in the UK or western Europe.

Power for the Land Cruiser comes from a 2.8-liter diesel engine, producing 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. However, by 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option, which is expected to enhance fuel economy in low-speed and stop-start driving scenarios.

The new Land Cruiser features an upgraded eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, offering smoother shifting compared to its predecessor's six-speed variant. It remains unclear whether a manual transmission option will be available.

Toyota has also made improvements to the Land Cruiser's off-road capabilities. The vehicle now has shorter overhangs, redesigned bodywork for improved visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. This feature, operated via a switch on the dashboard, is designed to provide a better ride quality and easier handling on rough terrains.

Other notable changes include the transition from hydraulic to electric power steering, which Toyota claims reduces kickback and enhances maneuverability at all speeds. Additionally, the body panels have been designed for easy repair or replacement, particularly the front bumper, which is divided into several sections.

Inside the Land Cruiser, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be easily operated with gloved fingers. The vehicle will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the Land Cruiser are set to begin later this year, with deliveries expected to commence in the first half of 2024. Toyota will also offer a limited First Edition model, limited to approximately 3,000 units for Europe. This special variant will feature classic round headlights and be offered in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
