Toyota Land Cruiser gets updated with diesel and hybrid power

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its iconic Land Cruiser off-roader, showcasing several enhancements. The vehicle now boasts a stronger chassis, a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. In terms of appearance, Toyota has opted for sleek retro panelling inspired by its popular models from the 1980s and 1990s, replacing the previous generation's angular design.

Despite these changes, the fundamental formula of the Land Cruiser remains intact. The body still rests on a traditional ladder frame, albeit one that is 50% stiffer and offers an increased towing capacity of 3.5 tons. Additionally, the engine and transmission continue to drive solid-beam axles. The Land Cruiser shares the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series model, which is not currently available in the UK or western Europe.

Currently, power is derived from a 2.8-litre diesel engine generating 201hp and 500Nm of torque. However, by 2025, a 48V mild hybrid system will be offered as an option. This system is expected to improve fuel economy during low-speed and stop-start driving. Both engine variants will be paired with a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, which promises smoother shifting compared to the previous six-speed option. It is unclear whether a manual transmission will be available.

The Land Cruiser's off-road capabilities have also been enhanced. The vehicle now features shorter overhangs, bodywork designed to provide better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. The anti-roll bar can be operated via a dashboard switch, improving ride quality and handling on rough terrain. Additionally, Toyota has replaced the hydraulic power steering with electric power steering, reducing kickback and enhancing maneuverability at all speeds.

Considering the Land Cruiser's intended use for tough off-road driving, the body panels have been developed to facilitate easy repairs or replacements. This is especially true for the front bumper, which comes in multiple sections. Inside the vehicle, buyers can expect a rugged interior equipped with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be operated with gloved fingers. The Land Cruiser will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser are set to commence later this year, with deliveries expected to begin in the first half of 2024. Toyota will also release a limited First Edition model, limited to approximately 3,000 units for Europe. This special edition will feature classic round headlights and be offered in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
