Toyota Land Cruiser: New Diesel and Hybrid Options

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its popular Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model features a stronger chassis, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. In terms of aesthetics, the Japanese automaker has opted for sleek retro panelling inspired by its iconic 60- and 80-series models from the 1980s and 1990s, abandoning the previous generation's angular design.

Despite the visual changes, the fundamental formula of the Land Cruiser remains the same. It still sits on a traditional ladder frame, albeit one that is 50% stiffer and offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles, maintaining the vehicle's ruggedness and durability.

The updated Land Cruiser shares the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series model, which is not available in the UK or western Europe. Currently, power is provided by a 2.8-liter diesel engine with 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. However, in 2025, a 48V mild hybrid system will be introduced as an option, expected to enhance fuel economy during low-speed and stop-start driving.

Both diesel and hybrid versions will be equipped with a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, offering smoother gear changes compared to the previous six-speeder. It remains unclear whether a manual transmission option will be available.

The Land Cruiser's off-road capabilities have been further improved with shorter overhangs, bodywork designed to provide better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. The latter can be operated through a switch on the dashboard, enhancing ride quality and handling on rough terrain.

In terms of steering, Toyota has transitioned from hydraulic to electric power steering. This change is said to reduce kickback and improve maneuverability at all speeds.

The vehicle's body panels have been developed with off-road driving in mind, allowing for easy repair or replacement of sections. Notably, the front bumper is divided into several sections for added convenience.

Inside the Land Cruiser, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be easily operated even with gloved fingers. The vehicle will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser will begin later this year, and deliveries are expected to commence in the first half of 2024. Additionally, a limited First Edition model will be offered, with only around 3,000 units planned for Europe. This special edition will feature classic round headlights and will be available in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
