Toyota Land Cruiser: New Power Options
【Summary】Toyota has unveiled an updated version of the Land Cruiser with a stronger chassis, new transmission, and hybrid powertrain option. The design features retro panelling inspired by past models. It retains the traditional ladder frame and solid-beam axles. The diesel engine will be available with a mild hybrid system in 2025, improving fuel economy. Off-road capabilities have been enhanced with shorter overhangs and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar.
Toyota has introduced an updated version of its iconic Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model boasts a stronger chassis, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. In terms of appearance, Toyota has ditched the previous generation's awkward angular design in favor of sleek retro panelling inspired by its 1980s and 1990s 60- and 80-series models.
Despite the changes in looks, the core elements of the Land Cruiser remain the same. The body still sits on a traditional ladder frame, albeit one that is 50% stiffer and offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles. The chassis used in the updated Land Cruiser is the same GA-F platform found in the full-size 300-series Land Cruiser, which is not available for purchase in the UK or western Europe.
Currently, the Land Cruiser is powered by a 2.8-liter diesel engine that produces 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. In 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option for improved fuel economy at low speeds and during stop-start driving. Both engine options will be paired with an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, which promises smoother gear changes compared to the previous six-speed transmission. It is unclear whether a manual option will be available.
In terms of off-road capability, the updated Land Cruiser features shorter overhangs, bodywork designed to provide a better view of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. The anti-roll bar can be operated using a switch on the dashboard, enhancing ride quality and handling on rough terrain. Toyota has also replaced the hydraulic power steering with electric power steering, claiming that it reduces kickback and improves maneuverability at all speeds.
The body panels of the Land Cruiser have been designed for easy repair or replacement, especially the front bumper, which is divided into several sections. Inside, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be operated with gloves. The vehicle will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.
Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser will begin later this year, with deliveries expected to start in the first half of 2024. Additionally, a special First Edition model will be offered, limited to approximately 3,000 units for Europe. This model will feature classic round headlights and will be available in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
