Toyota is set to revive the Stallion nameplate in 2024 with the introduction of a club-cab compact bakkie. The Stallion will be positioned as a utilitarian workhorse and will compete against other similar models in the market.
Before discussing its competition, let's take a look at the key characteristics of the Stallion. It will have a slightly smaller form factor compared to the current-generation Hilux, measuring 5,300 mm in length, 1,785 mm in width, and 1,740 mm in height. In contrast, the Hilux is 5,325 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, and 1,815 mm tall.
While no specific details have been released about the Stallion's engine, speculation suggests that it may be powered by a 2.0-liter petrol four-cylinder. As for the price, industry sources estimate that it will start at around R190,000, positioning it as a practical and affordable option rather than a lifestyle bakkie.
One of the competitors to the Stallion is the Suzuki Super Carry 1.2 PICK UP. This eleventh-generation model has a no-nonsense design and is powered by a 1.2-liter four-cylinder petrol engine. It has a payload capacity of 750 kg and measures 3,800 mm in length, 1,562 mm in width, and 1,883 mm in height.
Another contender is the JAC X100 1.2 single cab dropside, which offers unbeatable affordability, commendable fuel consumption, and impressive load-carrying abilities. It is larger than the Super Carry, measuring 4,435 mm in length, 1,560 mm in width, and 1,825 mm in height. The X100 has a payload capacity of 1,040 kg.
The Mahindra Bolero 2.5Di single cab Maxitruck Plus is the largest model on this list. It measures 4,925 mm in length, 1,700 mm in width, and 1,825 mm in height. Powered by a 2.5-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, it has a payload capacity of 1,150 kg.
These are just a few of the options available in the compact bakkie market. If you're in the market for a new or used Toyota or any other car, you can find a wide selection on CARmag.
