Toyota's Sneak Peek at Upcoming Hybrid SUV

Toyota has released a teaser image for an upcoming midsize all-wheel-drive hybrid SUV. Unlike the previous teaser, this image provides some hints about the vehicle. The caption emphasizes that this SUV goes beyond what is expected, with a focus on the word "beyond."

The previous teaser only showed the front lights, which had a C-pattern similar to the new Prius. However, this new teaser confirms that the vehicle is an SUV and not a crossover. The HEV AWD badges on the tailgate suggest that this SUV might be part of the Camry family, but its midsize designation puts it in the range of the Rav4, Venza, and Highlander.

Speculation arises as to whether this SUV is a replacement for the 4Runner. Although a new 4Runner is expected soon, it does not start with a C. There is also a Compact Cruiser in the works, but that vehicle is supposed to be smaller and all-electric, not hybrid.

The highlighting of the word "beyond" in the caption suggests that this SUV fits into Toyota's "beyond zero" concept, which includes all types of electrified vehicles. Since this SUV is hybrid, it aligns with this concept.

As for the type of SUV, it is unlikely to be a direct competitor to the Wrangler or Bronco. The use of "all-wheel-drive" instead of "four-wheel-drive" suggests that it might be a ruggedized, off-road capable machine in the Crown family. It could be larger than the Rav4/Venza but not as hardcore as the 4Runner.

Toyota is expected to release two more teasers before unveiling the vehicle at the LA Auto Show in mid-November.
