Enhanced security measures against Range Rover thefts

Jaguar Land Rover has announced that it has invested over £10 million in developing and implementing security upgrades to reduce the risk of Range Rovers being stolen. The company is aiming to combat the growing problem of key cloning and keyless car theft, as well as criminals targeting their high-value vehicles for parts or resale overseas. According to recent DVLA data, the Range Rover was the second most stolen car of 2022, and the Land Rover Discovery was the fifth most stolen. In fact, the number of stolen Range Rovers has increased by 47% since 2021, reaching a total of 5,533.

JLR has stated that their vehicles manufactured from 2022 onwards are built on their most advanced electrical architecture, which means they have the latest security features and are proving to be resilient against theft. Since January 2022, only 0.07% of new Range Rovers and new Range Rover Sports on the road have been stolen, while only 0.3% of new Defenders have been affected since 2020.

However, the carmaker has been facing challenges in delivering an ultra-luxury experience to Range Rover customers due to issues such as theft by organized criminal gangs and a parts distribution crisis. JLR is working hard to resolve these issues and ensure the security of their vehicles. The latest security and technology can also be applied to previous generation vehicles, including those that are out of warranty, to provide them with the same level of protection as current models.

Since 2022, more than 65,000 eligible vehicles from 2018 models onwards have received security updates through the Jaguar Land Rover dealer network. JLR has been reaching out to customers directly and is now urging remaining owners of Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, and Jaguar cars built since 2018 to take advantage of these free updates.

Police forces are recommending that owners of Land Rovers and Range Rovers fit mechanical security devices, such as pedal locks, wheel clamps, and steering wheel locks, to increase the deterrent against theft. PC Peter Fraser from Staffordshire Police advises all vehicle owners, especially Land Rover and Range Rover owners, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of falling victim to thieves.

JLR also recommends that owners use their Jaguar and Land Rover 'Remote' apps, which provide a range of security features such as vehicle lock reminders and 'Guardian Mode' that monitors the vehicle and alerts the owner to any unauthorized interaction.

Patrick McGillycuddy, managing director of JLR UK, emphasized the company's commitment to tackling vehicle theft and ensuring a positive ownership experience for their clients. He stated that their investment of over £10 million demonstrates this commitment, and they will continue to work with law enforcement and key partners to develop and deploy effective anti-theft measures.

JLR strongly advises their clients to take the following security steps:
