Seven people lost their lives and four others were injured in a tragic accident on the Marondera-Harare route. The incident occurred when a Honda Fit, illegally carrying passengers, collided head-on with a VW Touareg along the Harare-Mutare Highway. The driver of the Honda Fit was driving towards Harare from Marondera and veered into the lane of oncoming traffic, resulting in the collision. The seven occupants of the Honda Fit, including the driver, died instantly, while two from the same vehicle and one from the VW sustained injuries. The deceased were taken to Marondera District Hospital mortuary, and the injured were rushed to the same hospital for treatment.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident, stating that more information would be provided later. At the accident scene, the two vehicles involved were still present, awaiting removal. Witnesses at the scene expressed shock and distress over the incident. Ms. Juliet Shereni, who was at a nearby shopping center, recounted hearing a loud bang and witnessing the Honda Fit overturned. Another witness, Ms. Argatha Mombe, described hearing the loud crash and rushing outside to witness the fatal accident. Both witnesses, along with others, tried to assist the victims before the police arrived.
Ms. Mombe emphasized that this stretch of road has become a dangerous spot, with numerous fatal accidents occurring. She called on the government to install speed humps to prevent further tragedies.
