Tesla is set to release its latest offering, the Universal Wall Connector, in October 2023. Priced at $785 in Canada ($595 USD), this charging solution is designed for both Tesla and non-Tesla electric vehicles. It aims to be a convenient option for apartment buildings, hotels, and offices, providing a single solution for charging various EVs in North America.
The Universal Wall Connector boasts several key features. It offers an 11.5 kW / 48 amp output, allowing for up to 44 miles of range in just one hour of charging. It also integrates a J1772 adapter, ensuring compatibility with different electric vehicles. The connector features an auto-sensing handle tailored specifically for Tesla charge ports. Users can monitor and adjust their charging activities through the Tesla app, thanks to the built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. The connector is suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations and can be adjusted to the specific amperage requirements of the installation site. Additionally, it allows for power sharing among six Wall Connectors simultaneously. The unit comes with a 24-foot cable for extended reach and a four-year warranty for residential installations.
One interesting feature of the Universal Wall Connector is that the J1772 adapter can only be released when the unit is powered on, preventing theft of the adapter by passersby. Tesla emphasizes the importance of professional installation and provides a directory of over 1,000 certified installers for user convenience.
On the commercial front, Tesla is inviting property managers and developers to join its Charging Partners network. By incorporating the Wall Connector into their facilities, businesses can offer rapid EV charging, attracting and retaining clientele. These installations also come with the advantage of pay-per-use systems and continuous remote monitoring.
Tesla's regular Wall Connector, which only includes the connector for Tesla vehicles, is priced at $650. For an additional $135, customers can have the J1772 adapter built-in to one charging unit for their home or business.
As a side note, Tesla is planning to introduce enhanced features for the Tesla app later this year. In other Tesla news, the company recently unveiled a new Model S and Model X Standard Range with a lower cost in Canada. Additionally, EV automaker Fisker has announced its adoption of Tesla's North American Charging Standard.
