V8's surprising return
【Summary】Mercedes-AMG plans to bring back the V8 engine in its C63 sports sedan due to slow sales of the new four-cylinder version. The company is preparing to install the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine in the car by 2026. The new C63 features a four-cylinder engine with electric motor boost, but buyers have shown lukewarm interest in it. Mercedes-AMG has previously stated plans to update the V8 engine to meet emissions regulations.
Mercedes-AMG is reportedly planning a surprising comeback for its V8-powered C63 sports sedan, opting to replace the smaller and more fuel-efficient engine that was recently launched. The decision comes as a result of sluggish sales of the new four-cylinder C63, prompting Mercedes-AMG management to reconsider their strategy. Although the new C63 has not yet been released in Australian showrooms, the company is said to be preparing to equip the hero sports sedan with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine as early as 2026.
The current iteration of the C63 features a Formula 1-inspired 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with electric motor boost, producing an impressive 500kW of power and 1020Nm of torque. However, despite these impressive figures, AMG buyers have shown little enthusiasm for a four-cylinder C63 after years of experiencing the power of V8 engines.
While Mercedes has not confirmed or denied the European media's speculations, the company has previously expressed its intention to update the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine to comply with the forthcoming EU7 emissions regulations, ensuring its continued use in various models.
Although the V8 engine was removed from the C63, it remains in use in several other AMG models, such as the S63, SL63, and G63. However, to meet the new regulations, the V8 engine will likely require some form of hybrid assistance in the future. This solution was demonstrated by AMG with the recent unveiling of the GT 63 S E Performance, which combines the 4.0-liter V8 engine with an electric motor, resulting in an impressive output of 620kW and 1400Nm.
Whether this hybrid system can be accommodated within the smaller C63 body remains uncertain. Nevertheless, Mercedes-AMG appears to have recognized that there is still a demand for V8 engines, despite the stricter emissions regulations and the growing popularity of electric vehicles.
