Volkswagen's Electric Vehicle Sales Surge by 45%

Volkswagen Group, which includes brands like Audi, Skoda, and Porsche, has achieved a significant milestone by delivering over half a million electric vehicles in the first nine months of 2023. This surge in electric vehicle sales reflects the growing trend of people shifting away from fossil fuel cars. The German company is dedicated to achieving a net carbon-neutral balance by 2050.
As of September 30, Volkswagen Group's electric vehicles now account for 7.9% of their total deliveries, up from 6.1% in 2022. Europe remains the primary market for electric vehicle growth, with a 61% increase in sales, totaling 341,100 vehicles. In America, electric vehicle deliveries grew by 74% to reach 50,300 units.
Breaking down the numbers, Volkswagen delivered 273,000 electric vehicles, followed by Audi with 123,000 EVs and Skoda with 54,400 battery-powered models. Porsche contributed a five percent share with 27,900 electric vehicles delivered, while Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles held a four percent share with 19,600 EVs delivered.
Hildegard Wortmann, a member of Volkswagen Group's extended executive committee for sales, expressed satisfaction with the overall performance of their electric vehicle deliveries, which saw a global increase of 45% in the first nine months. Despite some reluctance in the European market, Volkswagen Group managed to gain market share and remain the leader in the electric vehicle segment. However, their order intake fell short of their ambitious targets due to the lower-than-expected overall market trend.
Among the various models offered by Volkswagen Group, the Volkswagen ID.4 emerged as the most popular, with 162,100 vehicles sold. The ID.3 followed closely behind with 90,500 deliveries, while Audi's Q4 e-tron, including Sportback models, secured the third position with 77,900 examples delivered.
