Volvo EM90: Upcoming Model Details

The new pictures released by Volvo showcase the design of the EM90, featuring a bluff and boxy exterior. The front grille is inspired by cityscapes and glassy skyscrapers commonly found in rapidly growing Chinese cities, which the EM90 is specifically designed for. The signature 'Thor's Hammer' headlight design is present, and the back of the vehicle is adorned with tall, slender tail lights that also reference city environments. However, despite its cool appearance, there may be some disappointment for those in the UK, as Volvo UK has expressed plans to focus on SUVs and crossovers, potentially limiting the availability of the EM90 in the region.

Volvo has been striving to position itself in the luxury market, and the EM90 takes this concept further, albeit in a slightly unconventional way. While the driver is certainly taken care of, the main focus is on the passengers, particularly those in the four individual seats in the rear cabin. These seats feature 'zero gravity' padding for supreme comfort, and each occupant has control over heating, ventilation, and other settings to create their own personal space. The middle row seats can recline and be equipped with luxuries like massage functions. Noise-cancelling technology, air suspension, and 'silent tyres' contribute to a serene atmosphere. For entertainment or business purposes, a 15.6-inch screen can be unfolded from the roof, accompanied by a 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins stereo system, creating a "private concert hall on the move." The interior can be configured using screens, voice commands, and 'smart surfaces,' with ambient lighting adding to the overall ambiance. The use of sustainably sourced materials, such as recycled plastics and reclaimed woods, further enhances the luxurious Scandinavian living room feel that Volvo aims to achieve.

It is reasonable to assume that the EM90 shares technology with the already revealed EX90 luxury SUV, although the electric drive system has been tuned for range rather than power and performance. With just under 150 horsepower from the electric motor, the EM90 offers smooth and refined transportation around the city. The large battery promises over 400 miles of range between charges, according to Chinese testing figures provided by Volvo.

The EM90 is primarily designed for the Chinese market, with no current plans for European sales. However, there is a possibility that Volvo may reconsider its original plans if the Lexus LM350h, a similar vehicle, gains popularity. Additionally, Volvo has other cars planned for release this year. The smaller EX30 will provide a more affordable option for driving an electric Volvo, while the larger and more luxurious EX90 SUV will offer a European-centric take on the EM90's themes.
