VW ID.5 GTX: a perfect electric vehicle for families

The VW ID.5 is currently the largest car in its pure electric range – at least until the VW ID.7 launches later this year. VW has chosen to keep its electric line separate, with all models sporting the ID. prefix, which allows for specific design and aerodynamics. However, this approach may not generate the same loyalty as electric versions of ICE cars.

The closest ICE model to the ID.5 is the T-Roc, a mid-sized SUV. VW does not currently have EV equivalents of its larger Tiguan and Touareg SUVs, but will be adding the premium saloon equivalent, the Arteon (ID.7), later this year.

VW's ID.5 launched in 2022, with the sportier GTX version joining the line-up. The standard model starts from £50,710, while the GTX demands a slightly higher £56,545. The ID.5 is not currently available in the US and is expected to come to Australia in 2024. Comparatively, a Tesla Model 3 offers better range and acceleration, but the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Audi Q4 e-tron offer similar options at different price points.

The ID.5 has a distinctive SUV coupé design, appealing to existing VW owners. It is big enough for a family of four and features 20-inch alloys, black wheel arches, and large air intakes. The interior of the ID.5 GTX features the Sports Package Plus option, with stitched leather steering and upholstery.

The VW ID.5 is packed with tech features, including IQ.Light, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a head-up display, and various driver assistance features. However, the main display feels like an afterthought and the touch-sensitive buttons and screen surround feel plasticky for a premium model.

Driving the ID.5 is a pleasant experience, with enough power to feel responsive. It has a range of 300 miles and a max DC charge of 135kW. Overall, the ID.5 is a solid choice for current VW owners and those looking for a family-sized car.

While it may not have any standout features, the VW ID.5 is a logical and reliable option in the EV market. It may benefit from a more extreme performance option in the future.
