VW ID.5 GTX: the perfect electric vehicle for families

The VW ID.5 is currently the largest car in its pure electric range – at least until the VW ID.7 launches later this year. VW has chosen to keep its electric line separate from its ICE cars, with all electric models sporting the ID. prefix. This approach allows for specific design for the electric platform and improved aerodynamics, but it may not inspire loyalty from drivers who are accustomed to electric versions of ICE cars.

The closest ICE model to the ID.5 is the T-Roc, a mid-sized SUV that joined the line-up in 2017. VW does not currently have EV equivalents of its larger Tiguan and Touareg SUVs, and the premium saloon equivalent, the Arteon (the ID.7), will be added later this year.

VW's ID.5 was first launched in 2022, with the sportier GTX version joining the line-up at the same time. The standard model starts at £50,710, while the GTX starts at £56,545. The ID.5 is not currently available in the US and is expected to come to Australia in 2024. Comparatively, the Tesla Model 3 offers similar pricing in standard and performance models, but with better range and acceleration. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 also offer similar size at a lower price point, while the Audi Q4 e-tron is slightly more expensive but offers a similar spec. The ID.4, which offers a more traditional SUV rear, starts at £38,845 and goes up to £52,865 for the GTX model.

The ID.5 has more traditional hatchback features despite being classified as an SUV. It has a look that is distinctly VW in styling and will appeal to existing VW owners. It is big enough to accommodate a family of four and their luggage without appearing overly large. The car features 20-inch alloys, black wheel arches, and large air intakes at the front. The two-tone paintwork leaves the top section black, with a choice of five colors on the body. The ID.5 offers both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options, with the GTX version featuring dual motors. In terms of economy and range, the GTX has up to 314 miles from its 77kWh battery, while the standard ID.5 offers 327 miles. The interior of the ID.5 GTX features the Sports Package Plus option, with stitched leather steering and upholstery featuring the GTX badging.

The VW ID.5 is equipped with plenty of tech, both inside and out. It features IQ.Light as standard, which uses micro LEDs to provide a bright and clear view of the road. The interior features a 12-inch center display and a smaller 5.3-inch display behind the wheel. It is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and can connect to Apple Music or Spotify through the car's own data connection. The ID.5 also includes a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and Park Assist Plus for automated parallel parking.

Driving the ID.5 is a pleasant experience. It strikes a balance between size and power, making it responsive and justifying its GTX sports badge. It drives much like other Volkswagens, but completely silently. The range on the model tested was 300 miles, which is slightly less than the standard GTX setup, but still sufficient for longer journeys. The ID.5 has a max DC charge of 135kW, which is currently the norm for most chargers in the UK.

The VW ID.5 is a solid choice for current VW owners and those looking for a family-sized car. While it may not have any standout features, it offers a logical and practical option. It is not as tech-focused as Teslas, as futuristic as Hyundai or Kia models, or as luxurious as the Audi Q4. However, it does not have any major downsides and provides a good overall package. The reviewer suggests that the GTX model could offer more extreme performance, similar to the R models for VW cars.
