VW Refutes Claim About ID. Buzz Camper Van's Weight Restriction

Reports have surfaced suggesting that the development of the ID.Buzz camper van from Volkswagen has encountered delays due to its weight. The long-wheelbase version of the electric van may exceed the weight limit permitted for drivers with a typical European license. This could potentially require owners to obtain a new license to operate the vehicle.

However, Volkswagen denies that any such issues have caused delays in the development of the project. The automaker's representative, Mark Gillies, states that the rumors of significant delays are incorrect.

These rumors play on the perception that electric vehicles are heavy. The weight of electric powertrains, along with additional features such as battery packs, roof tents, beds, and sinks, can contribute to the overall weight of the vehicle. This has implications for crash testing and vehicle hauling.

In response to the increasing weight of electric vehicles, Europe is considering raising the weight limit for licenses. Currently, drivers with a Category B license can operate vehicles with a maximum weight of 7,716 lbs (3,500 kg). However, this limit could be raised to 9,370 lbs (4,250 kg), which would potentially resolve the camper van weight issue for Volkswagen.
