Worker backlash corporation reverse vegan agenda
【Summary】Volkswagen faced worker backlash in Germany for its vegan agenda, leading to the reversal of its ban on meat dishes. The company had replaced meat-based sausages with vegan, vegetarian, and fish options in its office building. The decision was initially made due to employee demands for sustainability. The ban received criticism, particularly for affecting the popular Volkswagen currywurst sausage.
Worker backlash in Germany has led to Volkswagen, a major car manufacturer, reversing its vegan policies. In 2021, the corporation had stopped selling meat dishes, including meat-based sausages, in its office building in Wolfsburg, replacing them with vegan, vegetarian, and fish options. However, due to employee demand, the company has reintroduced meat and fish dishes alongside the vegan and vegetarian choices since August 7, 2021.
The initial ban on meat was implemented by Volkswagen in response to employee requests for sustainability. However, this decision faced significant criticism and backlash within Germany. Politicians also joined in to criticize the move, particularly focusing on the impact on the sale of Volkswagen's popular currywurst sausage. The currywurst, produced by the company since 1973, has become a widely enjoyed food item in Germany and is available at various supermarkets throughout the country.
Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder expressed his support for the currywurst and criticized the ban. He described the currywurst with fries as a source of energy for skilled production workers and stated that while he occasionally ate vegetarian, the idea of "no currywurst" was a step too far.
Volkswagen clarified that the reversal of the ban does not mean a complete abandonment of the company's pro-vegan agenda. Instead, they have reintroduced one rotating meat dish into the predominantly vegan menu. This means that the famous currywurst will only be available in the canteen on certain days, while alternative meat dishes will be offered on other days.
